Description: The Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) is an amphibious assault ship class being constructed by Navantia of Spain and Tenix of Australia for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Australian LHD is based on Spanish Navy's Juan Carlos I ship. Navantia, Tenix and the Australian government signed in Melbourne the LHD procurement contract on October 9, 2007. The contract was valued at 1,411.6 million Euro for the construction of two ships (LHD-1 and LHD-2). Navantia's stake in the LHD program is valued at 915 million Euro comprising ship's design and construction, power plants and platform control system totaling 9.5 million hours workload.

The LHD ship will feature an inclined well dock to support watercrafts and landing craft operations in Sea State 4; a large and hardened flight deck with ski jump enabling operations of medium- and heavy-weight helicopters as well as operations of unmanned aerial vehicles and VSTOL aircraft in Sea State 5; the facilities to accommodate aircraft, containers, armored vehicles and other equipment as well as 1,124 troops; and gas turbines based propulsion system.

According to Tenix documentation, the RAN will provide LHD ships with NH90 and Tiger ARH helicopters capable of operating from the ship's flight deck. On November 23, 2007, Tenix awarded Saab a AUD105 million contract for the development and procurement of 9LV Combat Management System and the naval surveillance radar Sea Giraffe to be installed on LHD ships. The lead ship, LHD-1, will be handed over by 2013 and the second ship, LHD-2, will be delivered by 2014.
