Description: The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) Advanced Technology Demonstrator-X (ATD-X) is a program aimed at developing a twin-engine, twin-seat stealth aircraft intended primarily for air defense missions. Externally the ATD-X is very similar the US Air Force F/A-22A Raptor but with tandem twin-seat and longer nose section. The Japanese ATD-X aircraft may eventually replace the Mitsubishi F-2 fighter jet under the F-3 designation but according to its size and external shape seems a more likely candidate for the replacement of the JASDF fleet of 200+ F-15J/DJ fighter aircraft. The ATD-X/F-3 air superiority stealth fighter is being developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and is expected to perform its first flight in the summer of 2015.
