Description: The Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL) is an advanced concept technology demonstration program being sponsored by the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The ATL is based on a C-130H Hercules military transport aircraft fitted with a high-energy chemical laser. The new weapon system will be used to destroy, damage or disable tactical targets on the ground with ultra-precision engagement capability that will dramatically reduce collateral damage. The chemical laser is fired through a rotating turret that extends through the aircraft's belly. The ATL weapon system is being envisaged for use in operations on the battlefield and in urban terrain. The first firing of the ATL weapon system while in-flight was conducted on May 19, 2008.
