Description: The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) F-3 program is aimed at developing an air superiority stealth fighter to replace the existing fleet of 100 F-2A/B and 200 F-15J fighter jets. The aircraft is being envisaged as a Japanese counterpart to the US Air Force F-22 Raptor even with greater combat capabilities to outperform the Russian Air Force T-50/Su-50 and the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) J-20 stealth fighters. The first prototype developed from the ATD-X demonstrator is expected to take the skies in 2025 achieving initial operational capability (IOC) in 2027. The F-2A/B and F-15J aircraft will be superseded by the F-3 stealth fighter by the mid-2030s and late 2030s respectively. As of March 2015, Japan intends to procure 200 F-3 stealth jets beginning in 2027.
