Description: The Future Combat Air System (FCAS) is a joint program between Germany and France launched in July 2017 to develop a fifth or sixth generation fighter as the replacement for the Eurofighter and Rafale jets. The new airplane would be able to conduct both offensive and defensive missions with the ability of operating along or directing a swarm of unmanned air vehicles. It is unknown if the new platform will be manned or unmanned and the program may get defined properly in the early 2020s. Airbus and Dassault Aviation would be the prime contractors of the new fighter aircraft expected to achieve initial operational capability (IOC) by 2040.
