Description:
BO 105 is a twin-engine, light, multi-role helicopter suitable for both civil and military applications. As a military aircraft BO 105 serves as observation, medical evacuation, utility and anti-tank attack helicopter. It is powered by two Allison 250 turboshafts each rated at 550-shp and driving a four bladed main rotor. Configured as an attack helicopter BO 105 can be equipped with HOT, TOW or Stringer missile systems. The German Army is the largest operator having ordered 212 BO 105P armed with HOT/HOT 2 anti-armor missiles. German BO 105Ps are also know as the PAH-1. Germany also purchased 100 BO 105M reconnaissance helicopters under VBH designation. Spain and Sweden also employ this aircraft as attack helicopter. Currently, Germany and Spain are replacing their aging BO105s by high performance Eurocopter Tiger combat helicopter.
In April 2006 the Albanian Ministry of Defense signed a contract with Eurocopter for 12 modernized BO 105M helicopters delivered as a gift by the German government. These helicopters were upgraded to the BO 105E-4 standard and were intended to aid Albania into its NATO membership transition.
