The militarized Bell 407 was conceived in response to the US Army Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter (ARH) program. This program calls for 368 helicopters to be delivered between fiscal years 2006 through 2013. A final decision on the ARH program is anticipated in July 2005. Finally, the Bell ARH proposal was selected on 29 July 2005 through a contract worth $2.2 billion.
On May 16, 2006, the city of Dallas ordered two Bell 206B3 and one Bell 407 helicopter for its Police Department. The Dallas Police department ordered these aircraft to replace its aging helicopter fleet assigned to law enforcement missions.
