Description:
The diesel-electric, long range Type 471 Collins-class submarines were designed to perform defensive and offensive littoral and open sea missions. They feature long endurance, up to 70 days of continuous operations at sea, high maneuverability, and low magnetic, acoustic, and infrared signatures emissions.
The HMAS Collins submarine achieved operational capability in the Royal Australian Navy in 1996. The six Collins-class submarines were designed by the Swedish Kockums shipyards and built in Australia by the Australian Submarine Corporation in Adelaide.
The Collins-class submarines are considered as the largest non-nuclear powered submarines in service today worldwide. They feature 6 533mm torpedo tubes enabled to launch MK 48 torpedoes, sub-Harpoon anti-ship missiles and mines.
In January 2006 Raytheon announced that was installing AN/BYG-1 submarine combat management system into Australian Collins attack submarines. The BYG-1 was intended to provide target motion analysis improvements and the ability to support Mk 48 ADCAP torpedoes.
