Contractor/s: Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH, Odense Staalskibsvaerft

Description: The Viking-class submarines are the result of a multinational program involving Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The Viking submarine will feature stealth technology and will be built employing an advanced modular construction technique in order to achieve the low acquisition cost requirement. An intergraded weapon system will coordinate weapon and sensors to achieve unprecedented performance.

The Stirling air independent propulsion (AIP) system will be provided for the Viking submarines. The Stirling AIP employs liquid oxygen and diesel fuel in a pressurized combustion chamber. It will enable Viking submarines to operate in stealth mode during extended underwater patrols.

The Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian Navies plans to purchase 2, 4, and 4 Viking-class submarines starting in 2005. Finland is an observer of the Viking and eventually could order additional Viking submarines.
