Description: The Baynunah-class multi-purpose missile corvettes are to be built by ADSB shipyards in United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the Navy of UAE. The first ship is scheduled to be commissioned by the UAE Navy in 2008. The procurement contract worth $500 million was awarded to ADSB shipyards in December 2003.

The project makes provision for four vessels and two additional vessels as option to be confirmed within 18-month, totaling six corvettes with all options exercised. The new multipurpose corvettes will be designed by French shipbuilder Constructions Mecaniques de Normandie (CMN). The first ship is scheduled to be French-built with the remaining vessels to be build at ADSB shipyards in UAE.

The Baynunah-class multipurpose corvettes will be the largest steel-hulled waterjet-powered vessels. The propulsion system combines four MTU Type 12V595 TE90 diesel engines with three Kamewa 112S11 and 125B11 waterjets. The 70 meters long corvettes will be protected with Rheinmetall's MASS countermeasures system.

In July 2004, Alenia Marconi Systems (AMS) signed a contract with ADSB for the supply of IPN-S command and control systems and NA 25 XM fire control systems. Moreover, AMS will be responsible for integration of a suite of weapons and sensors from MBDA and OTOmelara as well as providing logistics support and related services.

In October 2004, ADSB awarded Raytheon a production contract for four Mk 56 launching system sets to be installed on four Baynunah corvettes as well as options for two additional Mk 56 sets for two ships. Mk 56 combined with ESSM will provide primary air defense capability.
