Description:
The Project 1239 Bora is a guided missile air cushion ship designed to destroy a wide range of surface ships and missile boats in the littoral and closed sea environments. To do so, the Bora-class crafts are equipped with sophisticated sensors and weapon systems which provide an outstanding secondary capability against airborne threats. Moreover, these ships have been designed to successfully carry out their missions in intense ECM conditions and sea states of up to five. The lead air cushion ship was commissioned by the Russian Navy in the late 1990s.
The Bora-class flexibility allows these ships to accommodate a wide range of anti-ship missiles in four configurations. Each Bora can load: eight 3M80/SS-N-22 Sunburn supersonic anti-ship missiles (2 KT-206ME launchers and 3Ts-81E fire control system); 16 3M24/SS-N-25 subsonic anti-ship missiles (4 ZS-24E launchers and 3R-60UE fire control system); 12 Yakhont/SS-N-26 supersonic anti-ship missiles (2 SM-316 launchers and 3R50E fire control system); or a combination of 12 Yakhont and eight 3M24 missiles. One/two Kashtan-M weapon systems and 16 Igla short-range surface-to-air missiles provide Bora with air defense against airborne threats. In addition, the ship includes one AK-190 100mm single-barrel gun and two 14.5mm machine guns.
The Bora-class propulsion system is based on CODOG-CODAG design comprising two M511A reduction gear diesel units, two M10D1 flank speed gas turbines, and two M527OM3 auxiliary diesel motors to drive superchargers inflating the skirt. The onboard electric power system incorporates four 200kW diesel generators and four 1EKPV 15/150 electric compressors. All in, the ship has a top speed of 45 knots and a cruising range of 2,500 nautical miles. The ship's hull is made of non-corrosive aluminum-magnesium alloy.
