Description:
The Comandanti-class corvette has been designed to perform as an offshore patrol vessel in support of the Italian Navy. Besides, the ship can serve as support vessel for relief missions and act as a mobile logistic support unit for task forces required to operate outside the Mediterranean Sea. Their propulsion system consists of two diesel main engines Wrtsil W18 V 26XN developing 6,480 KW each and allowing a top speed of 25 knots. Cruising at 14 knots these ships can cross ranges of up to 3,500 nautical miles. The Italian Navy commissioned four ships between 2001 and 2002 and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ordered one ship to be commissioned in 2011 with an option for a second ship.
The radar and infrared signatures have been reduced for enhanced survivability. An aft helicopter flight deck and retractable hangar allows for operation of either an AB212 or NH90 helicopter. The weapon system comprises a 76mm 76/62 super rapid gun and two 25mm OTOBREDA cannons. The 25mm cannons have been replaced by two Marlin weapon stations on the ship ordered by UAE. The Comandanti-class vessels are also equipped with 2D search radar, fire control system, electronic warfare (EW) system, communications suite and command and control (C2) system.
