The K130-class corvettes design is based on proven MEKO A-class frigates and corvettes concept. The new corvettes will feature follow-on F124-class frigates systems, such as overall automation with reduced crew, networked technology and weapons system fully managed by software. They will replace current Type 143A Gepard (10), Type 148 Tiger (8) and Type 143 Albatros (10) fast attack boats in the German Navy totaling 28 units.
The K130 ships will be fitted with two innovative beyond the horizon area surveillance and reconnaissance drones instead of naval helicopters. Its stealth radar and Infrared features will enable the K130 vessels to operate in littoral environments developing littoral warfare missions employing RBS15 missiles. Originally the Polyphem-S weapon was selected but its cancellation forced the adoption of RBS15 missiles instead. Equipped with Polyphem-S these corvettes might be the first land attack capable vessels of the German Navy.
The German Navy has ordered a first batch of 5 K130-class corvettes to be commissioned between 2007 and 2008. The total number of Type 130 corvettes to be procured by German Navy could be 12-16 vessels depending on funds availability and German Navy future needs. The ARGE K 130 consortium will execute the construction of these corvettes. The consortium consists of the three shipyards Blohm + Voss in Hamburg as the leading yard, Nordseewerke in Emden and Friedrich L�rssen Werft in Bremen.
