Description:
The Type 022, Houbei NATO codename, is a catamaran-style fast attack missile craft armed with anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs) developed and built in China for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy (PLAN). The ship features an anti-electromagnetic interference system and stealth capability with minimized radar cross section. The PLAN intends to procure around 40 hulls of this class. As of early 2008, the first craft was still under construction. In early 2009 the first boats painted in blue, grey, black and white camouflage scheme were already operational with the PLAN.
The Type 022 crafts are intended to engage surface ships in coastal waters and are the replacement for the Type 021 class vessels. The propulsion system consists of two diesel engines and two waterjets allowing a top speed of 36 knots. The ships' weapon system comprises eight YJ-83 anti-ship missiles and a bow-mounted 30mm AK-630 gun for anti-aircraft warfare.
