Description: The Ataka, AT-9 Whirlwind NATO-codename or 9M120 Soviet industrial code, is a long range, supersonic anti-tank missile designed to be installed on a wide range of airborne, naval and ground-based platforms. It features a tandem shaped charge warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) protected tanks and heavyweight armored vehicles. A version fitted with High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead was designed to defeat small vessels, fortifications, low altitude helicopters and airplanes flying at low speed, and light armored vehicles both stationary or on the move. In addition to the tandem HEAT, the Shturm-Ataka weapon can be provided alternatively with demolition and penetration rod warheads. Its guidance system consists of Semi Automatic Command to Line-Of-Sight (SACLOS) via radiofrequency immune to Infrared (IR) and electronic jamming. The former Soviet Union fielded the Ataka missile family in 1989.

The 9M120F is a member of the Ataka missile family and is fitted with a high explosive (HE) fuel-air explosive warhead designed to suppress fire emplacements, bunkers, soft-skinned and lightly armored vehicles, aviation materiel, and sheltered personnel. The warhead has an explosive power similar to 9.5 kilograms of TNT. The 9M120F missile is intended tofire from Shturm-V systems deployed onMi-24V, Mi-28NE and Mi-8AMTSh (Mi-171Sh) helicopters and from Shturm-S systems mounted onthe 9P149 combat vehicle. Typically a land platform will be provided with 12 missiles, Mi-24V and Mi-8 helicopters with eight missiles and the Mi-28NE attack helicopter with 16 missiles.
