Description: The Almaz-Antey Concern 9M338 is a new compact surface-to-air missile (SAM) designed as the replacement for the 9M331 missile within the improved Tor-M2 medium-altitude, short-range air defense system. The 9M338 features an extended range compared with the 9M331 and is compact enough to allow a Tor-M2 vehicle to carry 16 missiles instead of only 8 9M331s. The first live fire test of the improved Tor-M2 with the 9M338 was carried out in October 2013 destroying five unmanned air vehicles (UAVs): three by direct hit and the other two by shrapnel by the exploding warhead. This new missile features increased precision against small and elusive targets such as UAVs and cruise missiles and could be fired with the carrier vehicle on the move. The Russian Army could field the 9M338 missile with the improved Tor-M2 air defense system in 2014 or 2015.
