Description: The BLU-109 is a high explosive blast fragmentation warhead with its case made of steel alloy to kill hardened targets. The more common variant of the BLU-109 is the BLU-109A/B. These warheads uses the FMU-143 family of detonators.
The BLU-109 warhead has been used with the GBU-24 and GBU-27 laser guided bombs; GBU-31 GPS-guided bomb; GBU-15 and EGBU-15 guided bombs; and the AGM-130 long range attack weapon. The BLU-109/B is a 2,000-lb class special configuration warhead much more slim than the Mk 84 warhead intended to penetrate targets having hard skin and detonating inside them.
The BLU-109 warhead was deployed during Operation Desert Storm in 1990 scoring great results paired off with the GBU-24 Paveway III laser guided bomb.
