Description: The Dual Mode Guided Bomb (DMGB) is a joint US Air Force and US Navy program aimed at developing a guidance kit that will bring versatility by selecting the optimal guidance mode for a given target without adding more weapons to the inventory. The DMGB weapon will combine laser-based guidance and a GPS/INS-based guidance modes that eventually may work together or separately depending on the mission profile. The two guidance modes will make the weapon suitable against stationary targets in bad weather, clouds, fog and smoke and against moving targets in optimal weather.
As of 2005, Lockheed-Martin with its laser and GPS/INS DMGB, Raytheon's Enhanced Paveway II and Boeing with the laser JDAM are competing for this contract with a decision on the entire program coming form the US military expected by February 2006. During 2005 both companies released several flight tests of their corresponding weapons that performed as predicted. The weapon itself will merge into a single body the capabilities from combat proven JDAM and Paveway II bombs.
It has been reported that the decision of developing a dual guided weapon was heavily influenced by the United States Armed Forces experience during the military campaigns in Afghanistan (2001-? Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (2003-? Iraqi Freedom). Working together, the GPS/INS brings the weapon close to the target and the laser guidance adds improved accuracy in the terminal phase. Working with a single guidance mode, the weapon can duplicate the performance of either a JDAM or Paveway II bomb.
The DMGB low-cost guidance kit is being developed to fit into MK 82, Mk 83 and Mk 84 general-purpose warheads and will match the same size and shape of the GBU bombs family. It will be released from both fighter aircraft and bombers against fixed, slow moving and relocatable targets. Another key of the DMGB program is that will not require bombs carriage and software modifications to aircraft that already support the GBU-10/12/16 Paveway IIs and JDAMs.
