Description: The Extended Range Munition (ERM) is a low-cost, long range five-inch (127mm) ballistic projectile being developed to be fired from US Navy's legacy Mark 45 naval guns. The US Navy ERM program is based on ATK's Ballistic Trajectory Extended Range Munition (B-TERM II). The projectile can hit a target at 60 nautical miles (111 km) with an Circular Error Probable (CEP) of about 20 meters.

ATK was awarded a $30 million 16-month contract in May 2004 for development and demonstration of the extended range projectile suitable for both the Mark 45 mod 4 and Mark 45 mod 2 naval gun systems. Naval long range engagements using legacy gun systems as well as offshore engagements are envisaged as key capabilities for naval forces in the 21st century.

Despite DD(X) destroyer will be provided with 155mm artillery suitable for the most demanding warfare scenarios, the US Navy intends to upgrade legacy fighting ships on the cheap developing and fielding new munitions with enhanced capabilities over existing ammunitions. That is the aim of the ERM program.
