Description: The Mark 48 torpedo is a heavyweight, self-propelled guided underwater projectile, designed to attack fast, deep-diving nuclear submarines and high performance surface ships. The first Mark 48 torpedo was deployed in 1972 replacing Mark 37 and Mark 14 torpedoes .The improved model Mark 48 ADCAP (Advanced Capabilities) was deployed in 1989.

The Mark 48 ADCAP can operate with or without the wire guidance and use active and/or passive homing. The Mark 48 is qualified to be launched under the Artic ice pack and in other arduous conditions. The ADCAP version has enhanced acquisition range, reduced vulnerability to enemy countermeasures, reduced warm-up and reactivation time, and enhanced effectiveness against surface ships. During final attack the Mark 48 torpedo uses its active/passive sonar seeker.

The Mark 48 ADCAP torpedoes are being deployed aboard Los Angeles-class, Ohio-class and Sea Wolf-class submarines. The US Navy has 1,046 Mark 48 ADCAP torpedoes in the inventory.
