Description: The R-37, also known as K-37, is a very long-range air-to-air missile developed by the former Soviet Union based upon the R-33 missile to engage AWACS and other surveillance aircraft. Depending on the flight profile the Mach 6 missile can engage airborne targets at ranges between 150 to 400 kilometers. The guidance system consists of inertial navigation with mid course target updates with semi-active radar or active radar seeker at the terminal phase of the flight. The R-37 missile was developed in the 1980s with the first flight conducted in 1989. The missile achieved some sort of initial operational capability in 1998 but the program was dropped by the Russian Air Force.
