Description: The SMArt 155 (Sensor-fuzed Munitions for Artillery 155) is a fire-and-forget projectile for use in all 155mm artillery systems. SMArt 155 combines a millimeter wave radar and an Infrared sensor to locate moving or stopped armored targets in all weather conditions, day and night, even in heavy countermeasures environments (2 seekers). It is in production for the German Army since 1998.
Each SMArt 155 projectile carries 2 sensor-fuzed munitions, after ejection from the projectile over the target area each parachuted munition searches for a potential target in a spiral pattern. Once a potential target is detected the munition detonates creating an explosively formed penetrator. The heavy metal penetrator is fired down into the vehicle's top where the armor is weak.
The SMArt 155 has a range of 27.5 km when fired from the PzH2000 self-propelled howitzer. Its well defined scan are make it suitable for close combat and delimited area engagements. A well defined scan area also makes SMArt 155 reliable and reduces collateral damage.
GIWS, a Dhiel and Rheinmetall joint venture, is responsible for the production of 9,000 SMArt 155 projectiles ordered by the German Army. ATK has partnered with GIWS to make the SMArt 155 available in the United States. As of January 2005, the 155mm weapon had been sold to Switzerland and Greece in addition to Germany.
Early in 2005, ATK and GIWS completed a series of field demonstrations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) involving the Smart 155 ammunition and UAE's G6 self-propelled howitzer, scoring 67 percent firing rate success against simulated armored vehicle targets. Smart 155 performed as expected in extreme hot conditions such as those of desert climate. Thus, Smart 155 IR sensors can distinguish a hot target from a cold background and, in reverse, a cold target from a hot background. UAE representatives were present at the test site.
