They feature 16 Bazalt, SS-N-12 Sandbox NATO-designation, long-range anti-ship missiles mounted inside of two coupled angled launch tubes with 4 pairs in either side of the ship. The S-300F Rif system provides air defense and anti-ship capabilities. The OSA-MA missile system provides short range air defense capability. A multi-functional 130mm two-barrel AK-130 gun and six 30mm AK-630 close-in guns provide additional capabilities.

The Project 1164 lead ship was commissioned by the Soviet Navy in 1983. Four ships were produced though 1999, first three of them are in service with Russian Navy and the last one with the Navy of Ukraine.
