Description: The Airborne, Maritime and Fixed Station Joint Tactical Radio System (AMF JTRS) is a component of military Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program intended to rapidly and seamlessly connect surface and airborne platforms during military operations. AMF JTRS creates an integrated IP-based network linking aircraft, ships and ground stations which enables those to effectively cooperate during a military operation. Typically, AMF JTRS would be used to detect, identify and engage a time-sensitive target.

AMF JTRS will be software defined, multi-function radio suites to meet the requirements of the US Air Force, US Army, US Navy and US Marine Corps as well as the Homeland Security Department. Software defined radios are handy because the software flexibility allows to meet different roles using the same hardware. Moreover, this new radio system will be a key enabler of network centric operations delivering highly secure, high performance communications. Another highlight of AMF JTRS is its interoperability with existing voice and data circuits as well as civilian communication systems used during disaster relief operations.

During 2005 prototypes of two industry teams were demonstrating the key capabilities of the AMF JTRS radio system such as the Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW). The US government is expected to issue a system design and development contract in 2006. Finally, a Lockheed Martin-led team was awarded an initial $766 million System Development and Demonstration (SDD) contract on March 29, 2008. AMF JTRS will be installed onto more than 160 varied platforms.
