Description:
The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) alternate Helmet-Mounted Display (HMD) is based heavily on Eurofighter Typhoon binocular helmet. It will provide high resolution imagery and symbology gathered by the F-35 sensors and night cameras. The virtual Head Up Display (HUD) is driven by powerful processor and graphics processor modules. In addition to the virtual HUD, the helmet will also incorporates a respirator for protection in nuclear, bacteriological and chemical environments.
The JSF alternate HMD development contract was awarded to BAE Systems by Lockheed-Martin in early September 2004. The Royal Navy and Royal Air Force selected the short take off and vertical landing (STOVL) version of JSF, designated F-35B. The UK F-35B pilots might be outfitted with the JSF HMD helmet.
