Description: The Raytheon's Sub HDR (Submarine High Data Rate) is a multi-band satellite communication (SATCOM) system being installed in US nuclear-powered attack submarines. The system consists of a mast-mounted antenna that can be deployed by raising it above the ocean's surface while the submarine remains submerged and stealthy at periscope depth.

The Sub HDR communication system connects to the Global Broadcast Service, the Milstar satellite constellation, and the Defense Satellite Communication System. In 1999, Raytheon upgraded the system to receive the Ka-band to connect to the Global Broadcast Service. It can send and receive secure data, voice, multimedia, imagery and video teleconferencing. Underwater forces can fully participate during fleet battle group FORCEnet operations thanks to this communication system.

To date, Raytheon has produced more than 50 Sub HDRs worth more than $160 million. Each Virginia-class submarine carries two Sub HDR masts that allow simultaneous communication at Super High Frequency (SHF) and Extremely High Frequency (EHF), as well as Ka band for the Global Broadcast Service satellite constellation.

In August 2002, the Sub HDR was tested on the attack submarine USS Providence SSN 719 a Los Angeles-class submarine. It has been reported that the Sub HDR is being provided for existing United States and United Kingdom boats, but no further information has been revealed about the classes and figures involved.

On July 28 2004, Raytheon was awarded a $29.4 million contract from Electric Boat Corporation for the procurement of Sub HDRs in support of the new Virginia-class submarine. Early in March 2006 Raytheon was awarded a $36 million contract to deliver 15 Sub HDR multi-band satellite communications systems to the US Navy.
