Description: The F100 engine was developed to power the twin-engine F-15 Eagle air defense fighter. Subsequently it was adopted by the F-16 Fighting Falcon multipurpose fighter.

The F100-PW-220 engine was more dependable, lighter and smarter than -100 engine. However, in terms of thrust it was less capable than GE's F110 models. The -220 engines were supplied to F-16C/D fighters produced from 1984 until 1991. F-15C/D fighters were also powered by F100-PW-220 engines.

The F100-PW-220U is a derivative of the F-100-PW-220E engine capable of providing up to 16,000 pounds of thrust while operating in a maritime environment, including carrier deck operations. The -220U engine has been designed for integration onto the X-47B unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV). Its first flight is scheduled in 2009, with at-sea carrier trials planned to begin in late 2011.
