F118

F118-GE-100

Origin:

United States of America

Contractor/s:

General Electric

Description:

The F118 was developed utilizing the same core design of the F101 engine. The F118 has different fan and afterburner packages to tailor engine performance compared with the F101.

The F118 engines are non-afterburning derivatives of the F101 engine. A critical feature because the F118 engine powers the stealth B-2A Spirit. The use of the afterburner means a great heat signature allowing B-2 to be detected and tracked by IR sensors.
