Description: The HMNZS Canterbury is one of seven ships commissioned by the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) under Project Protector awarded to Tenix (New Zealand) in April 2004. Canterbury is a Multi Role Vessel (MRV) based on a commercial RO-RO ship, Ben-My-Chree in operation in the Irish Sea, design. The ship is suitable for out of area operations, EEZ protection, law enforcement at sea, helicopter platform, Mine Counter-Measures (MCM), evacuation and disaster relief operations. It was build by Merwede Shipyard under a contract issued by Tenix and RNZN commissioned her on June 12, 2007.
The Combined Diesel and Diesel Electric (CODADE) propulsion system allows a top speed of 19.6 knots. The aft flight deck allows simultaneous operation of two NH90 or SH-2G helicopters or a single Chinook helicopter. The rear door/ramp allows rapid onload/offload of personnel, cargo and vehicles including two 59t class LCM landing crafts capable of carrying 50 tones at 9 knots with a range of 250 nautical miles (nm). The armament includes one 25mm naval gun and two .50 caliber machine guns.
