Description: The Indian Navy Godavari-class frigates have been designed to perform anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW). These 4-000t class ships are an Indian design derived from Royal Navy's Leander-class frigates but equipped with Soviet-made weapon systems. Three ships were built by Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL) and commissioned by the Indian Navy between 1983 and 1988. The Indian Navy plans call for a replacement in the 2010-2020 timeframe.
The Godavari-class frigates are fitted with an aft flight deck and hangar enabling operations of a single Sea King ASW helicopter. The weapon system consists of four SS-N-2C Styx anti-ship missiles, one SA-N-4 Gecko anti-aircraft weapon system with 20 9M33 missiles, one dual 57mm gun, four 30mm anti-aircraft guns and two triple 12.75-inch torpedo tubes. The propulsion system consists of two steam turbines developing 30,000-shp and allowing a top speed of 27 knots.
