Description: The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Hatakaze-class destroyers were designed primarily to provide area air defense for Japanese destroyers flotillas with secondary anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) capabilities. Its propulsion system combines two SM1A cruise gas turbines, two TM3D boost boost gas turbines developing 72,000-shp of power and enabling a top speed of 30 knots. Hatakaze features an aft flight deck for a single SH-60J helicopter. The weapon system consists of two 5-in (127mm) dual purpose guns, two 20mm Phalanx guns, 40 SM-1 MR surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) with MK-13 launching system, eight Harpoon anti-ship missiles, 16 ASROC rockets, and two triple 12.75-in torpedo tubes. The MSDF commissioned two ships in 1986 and 1988.
