Description: The Turkish Navy MILGEM, also known as Ada class, is a next generation, affordable class of corvette intended for patrol, anti-surface (ASuW) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions. Designed in Turkey, Istanbul Naval Shipyard is the prime contractor with Aselsan, Havelsan and Yates integrating key electronic equipments and the ship's advanced command and control system. The ship features low life cycle costs, high survivability, shock resistance, excellent seakeeping characteristics, high reliability, and stealth hull design achieving low radar, magnetic, infrared and acoustic signatures.
The MILGEM-class corvettes will be provided with an aft flight deck allowing for operation of a single S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopter. The weapon system includes a 76mm dual-purpose gun, two 12.7mm remotely controlled machine guns, eight Harpoon anti-ship missiles, a single MK31 RAM self-defense missile weapon system and Mark 46 torpedoes. The Turkish Navy is expected to commission the lead ship, named Heybeliada, by 2011 with more ships to follow.
