Description: The Johan de Witt-class ships have been designed to transport and disembark a fully equipped Marines battalion to a conflict area using organic helicopters and landing craft. Secondary missions will be military sealift and disaster relief as well as combined joint task force command center. The Witt-class ship will be larger than the Rotterdam-class currently in service with generous operational spaces and deck areas. Surgical and medical care areas will be provided to this ship.
The Royal Dutch Navy has ordered 1 ship plus an option for another one. The Johan de Witt ship will be commissioned in 2006. It will be able to transport 170 vehicles or 30 MBTs.
