Description: The Algerian Navy's Kalaat Beni-Abbes is an amphibious vessel built by Fincantieri at Muggiano shipyard, Italy, and delivered in September 2014. The contract was signed in 2011 between Algeria and Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a company controlled by Fincantieri and Selex ES, for the amphibious ship and three landing crafts to be built in Algeria. The Algerian Navy will use the Kalaat Beni-Abbes landing platform dock (LPD) as its newest flagship. The ship belongs to the Btiment de Débarquement et de Soutien Logistique/Logistics Support and Landing Ship (BDSL) class and was developed as an improved version of the Italian Navy's San Giorgio amphibious class vessel. The Algerian vessel adds an internal floodable dock capable of accommodating a 20-meter landing craft with the possibility of another two landing crafts attached to the ship's deck. The dock can be empties to accommodate ground vehicles or equipment. Each 20-meter long landing craft can transport up to 140 troops or a medium tank of up to 30-ton.
The 8,800-ton Kalaat Beni-Abbes amphibious ship is powered by two diesel engines developing a top speed of 20 knots. The vessel is 143 meters long and 21.5 meters wide with enough room for 430 troops and a crew of 164-men including the flight crew (12). All in 600-man can stay onboard this vessel. Its full length flight deck has two helicopter landing spots. Besdies, the Kalaat Beni-Abbes can serve as hospital ship with 60 beds and several operating theaters to provide medical support during military operations or civilian humanitarian relief operations.
