The LHD is intended to serve during both military and civilian operations. The LHD is also provided with four LCM landing crafts with a capacity for up to 60 tons of cargo. The ship features a combined diesel and gas turbine plant (CODOG) allowing a top speed of 25 knots. On board hospital has been designed to accommodate up to 28 injured patients. The Italian Navy awarded Fincantieri and SELEX ES a 1.1 billion Euro contract for the construction of the multi-purpose amphibious unit in July 2015. The LHD is scheduled for commissioning in 2022.
The LHD combat system comprises an X-band, four-faced multi-functional scanned-array radar system as well as the latest integrated communications. Other systems will be supplied by OTO Melara, WASS and Elettronica.
