Description: The SSN 688 Los Angeles-class attack submarines were designed to provide escort for carrier strike groups and hunter-killer capability against soviet ballistic submarines. The end of the Cold War has involved the nuclear attack submarines to counter Third World countries non-nuclear submarines that eventually could threaten sea line of communications. In addition to the attack and escort role, the Los Angeles-class submarines can assume intelligence collection, special operations forces delivery, and land-attack missions.

The SSN 719 USS Providence was the first Los Angeles-class submarine to accommodate 12 Vertical Launch Systems (VLS) for Tomahawk cruise missiles. These submarines also feature an upgraded nuclear reactor core. The US Navy commissioned eight boats between 1985 and 1989.
