Description: The Project 1134.2, also known as Berkut-B and Kara, is a further development of Project 1134 Kresta multi-role cruiser. The Soviet Navy commissioned 14 Project 1134 cruisers between 1968 and 1977 and seven Project 1134 class destroyers between 1971 and 1979. The 9,000-t class Kara destroyers were intended primarily to perform anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mission in open ocean with secondary anti-ship (ASuW) and anti-aircraft warfare (AAW) capabilities. Their propulsion system was based on Combined Gas and Gas (GOGAG) concept with two cruise gas turbines developing 12,000-shp and two boost gas turbines producing up to 92,000-shp.

The Kara-class destroyers were provided with an aft flight deck and hangar allowing for operation of a single Ka-25 or Ka-27 ASW helicopter. The weapon system includes eight SS-N-14 anti-ship and anti-submarine missiles, two Shtorm/SA-N-3 Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems with 80 missiles, two Osa-M SAM systems with 40 missiles, two dual 76.2mm 59-cal dual purpose guns, four 30 mm AK-630 anti-aircraft guns, ten 21-in torpedo tubes, and two RBU-6000 and two RBU-1000 ASW rocket launchers. One destroyer of this class was modified as the test bed for SA-N-6 long-range SAM system with 24 missiles.
