Description: The Project 1164 Atlant, also known as Slava by NATO or Moskva, class guided missile cruisers were conceived to perform Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW) and Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) missions. They feature 16 Bazalt, SS-N-12 Sandbox NATO-designation, long-range anti-ship missiles mounted inside of two coupled angled launch tubes with 4 pairs in either side of the ship. The S-300F Rif, also known as Fort?, system provides extended-range air defense and anti-ship capability. Two Osa-MA weapon systems with 24 missiles each provide short range air defense. A multi-functional 130mm two-barrel AK-130 gun and six 30mm AK-630 close-in guns provide additional firepower to these impressive ships. All three cruisers in service with the Russian Navy are meant to be upgraded starting in 2017 (Marshal Ustinov) and concluding in the early 2020s (Varyag).

The Project 1164 lead ship was commissioned by the Soviet Navy in 1983. Four ships were produced though 1999, first three of them are in service with Russian Navy and the last one with the Navy of Ukraine. The Russian Navy may have replaced or has plans to replace the aging Bazalt missiles with a new improved supersonic anti-ship missile called the P-1000 Vulkan which features an estimated range of 700 kilometers. As of 2018, the P-500 missiles were replaced by P-1000 Vulkan missiles while the Rif air defense systems will be upgraded to Rif-M standard (not confirmed). The ship propulsion system have been repaired and improved to allow these ships to remain in service in the 2020s and possibly in the 2030s. The radio-electronic equipment was upgraded including the addition of Fregat M2M and Podberyozovik-ET2 radar systems.
