Description: The Project 21630 Buyan, Project 21632 Tornado export version, is a new generation of river-sea type gunboat designed to protect Russia's 200-mile maritime economic zone and provide naval gunfire support for counterterrorist operations. The ship features stealth technology and is equipped with large- and medium-caliber dual purpose guns. Due to its shallow draft (up to 2 meters), the ship can perform missions in shallow waters, in river mouths, particularly delivering troops directly to the beach. At the same time, its design features enabled safe navigation in stormy conditions (at sea state up to 6) and use of weapons at sea state up to 4. Its water jets ensure speeds of up to 25 knots under any conditions, provide high maneuverability and controllability, reduce noise and running vibration, and are not prone to damage in shallow waters.

The 900-ton class Project 21631 Buyan-M is an stretched version of the 500-ton Buyan class gunboat. The Buyan-M features a larger and more sophisticated weapons payload including state-of-the-art missile systems. The 74-meter long ship is intended to perform anti-surface warfare (ASuW) combat missions with secondary air defense capability thanks to four Igla-1M surface-to-air missiles (SAM). The Buyan-M weapon system consists of a single A-190 100mm cannon, two AK-630M anti-aircraft guns, eight Club-S Kalibr anti-ship missiles, and four Igla-1M SAMs mounted on a 3M47 Gibka launcher. Besides, these vessels are equipped with a variety of 14.5mm (2) and 7.62mm (3) machine guns. The Russian Navy plans to procure three ships to be based in the Caspian Sea beginning in 2012 or 2013. The Russian Navy increased the number of Buyan-M gunboats to nine in late 2013/early 2014 with three boats to be delivered to the Black Sea and Baltic fleets.
