Description: The Project 22350 multi-purpose class frigate has been designed to perform anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) in support of blue water operations. The ship design is based upon Project 11356 frigate built for the Indian Navy and also features stealth technologies. The Russian Navy intends to procure between 10 and 20 such ships through 2015 to serve with the Russian Navy's Baltic, Black Sea, Northern and Pacific fleets. Originally, the lead ship was expected to be commissioned in 2011 but is planned to join the Russian Navy in late 2017 or 2018. The Project 22350 implementation has been delayed to due to the availability of proper gas turbines which were produced originally in Ukraine.

The Project 22356 is a variant of the Russian Navy Project 22350 multipurpose stealth frigate intended for the export market. No orders have been announced so far for this new multipurpose surface combatant ship. The weapon system consists of a 130mm A-192 naval gun, the Club-NKE missile family along with Yakhont supersonic-anti-ship missiles. The air defense system consists of the Shtil-1 medium-range missile system or the Rif-M long-range missile system. Close-range air defense is provided by either two Palma gun/missile system or two AK-630M gun systems. The vessel is equipped with the Paket anti-submarine/anti-torpedo torpedo system. A flight deck and hangar support a 12-ton class helicopters. It is likely that this new ships will accept sensors and weapons systems supplied from third parties. Nevertheless, the standard equipment includes the Fregat MAE-5 radar and Zarya-ME-03 sonar system. All in, the Project 22356 is a downgraded variant of the Project 22350 intended for the export market.
