Description: The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) Ulsan-class frigates are 2000-ton ships designed to perform anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface (ASuW) warfare. The lead ship construction started in April 1980 and was commissioned by the RoKN in 1981. A total of nine light frigates were built between 1980 and 1993 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Takoma, and Daewoo Heavy Industries. Their propulsion system is based on a combination of diesel and gas engines (CODAG) consisting of two LM2500 gas turbines each rated at 53,640-hp and two MTU 538 TB82 diesel engines each rated at 5,940-hp.

The weapon system of the Ulsan-class of light frigates comprises two 76mm naval gun from OTO Melara, four 30mm or three 40mm (latter ships) guns, twelve depth charges, eight Harpoon anti-ship missiles and twelve Mark 46 torpedoes. The SLQ-25 Nixie torpedo decoy, chaff launchers and the PHS-32 hull-mounted sonar system were provided to the Ulsan frigates. The weapons and equipment provided to the ships of this class may vary as well as the ship's displacement.
