Description: The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Asagiri is a class of multi-role escort frigates, destroyers for MSDF, with outstanding anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) capabilities and limited anti-air warfare (AAW). The MSDF commissioned eight Asagiri-class frigates between 1988 and 1991. These ships' design is the basis of the more capable Murasame and Takanami frigates commissioned by the JMSDF between 1996 and 2010.

Asagiri-class frigates propulsion system consists of four SM1A gas turbines developing 54,000-shp of power and enabling a top speed of 30 knots. These frigates feature an aft flight deck and hangar facility allowing for operation of a single SH-60J helicopter. The weapon system consists of a 76mm dual purpose gun, two 20mm Phalanx guns, eight Harpoon anti-ship missiles, 16 ASROC rockets, one eight-cell Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missile system, and two triple 12.75-in torpedo tubes.
