Description:
The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) DD 19 is a 5,000t class multi-role frigate, destroyer for JMSDF, aimed at providing local area defense in support of the Japanese destroyer units. The new frigate will be equipped with Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM) and Vertical Launch ASROC (VLA) in vertical launching systems, anti-ship missiles (Harpoon?), two 20mm advanced gun systems (Phalanx?), a 5-in naval gun, and Enhanced FCS-3 anti-aircraft active phased array radar system. In addition, the DD19 frigate will be provided with an aft flight deck and hangar?, hull-mounted sonar array and the upper ship's structure designed to be as stealth as possible.
According to Japan's National Defense Program Guidelines (NDPG) of 2007, the JMSDF is required to possess eight destroyer units for mobile operations with each unit consisting of four vessels. Three of these vessels are multi-role destroyers (DD) and the fourth is an Aegis-equipped ship (DDG). The DD19 primary mission will be to protect the DDG ship from potential air attacks while it is engaged in ballistic missile defense (BMD) operations. The lead ship was funded in fiscal year 2007 and is expected to be commissioned in 2011. Following NDPG, JMSDF will procure up to eight vessels of this class.
