Description: The European Multi-Mission Frigates (FREMM) is a joint program between France and Italy to develop and deploy a new generation frigate by 2010. The FREMM will be provided in two versions for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and land attack missions. Each frigate type will feature the same defense capabilities and hardware against airborne threats and surface ships. A NH90 helicopter and land attack cruise missiles could be carried in both versions.
The anti-submarine warfare (ASW) FREMM will feature a towed sonar and extra torpedoes load. The land attack FREMM will feature unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs) and the capability to infiltrate commandos on the enemy shore. The propulsion system would be built around a gas turbine.
The French Navy and the Italian Navy require up to 27 FREMM frigates with deliveries beginning in 2008 and will continue over the second decade of the 21st century. This program started when both countries achieved an initial agreement in 2002. Frigates ordered by both countries will differ depending upon mission requirements outlined by each Navy.
In October 2004, Alenia Marconi Systems (AMS) released that it had been selected as key supplier for the FREMM program. EMPAR radar system developed by AMS for the Horizon program will form the core of the missile system. AMS will supply a new generation IFF radar, the RAN 30X/I medium range radar, NA-25 fire control system, together with the Dual Weapon Assignment Logic Unit (DWALU).
OCCAR awarded a 3.5 billion Euro contract to an industry team consisting of Thales, Fincantieri, DCN and MBDA for the development and building of the first batch of FREMM firgates. The first eight frigates, of which six will be outfitted for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and two in land-attack version, are for the French Navy with deliveries expected to begin in 2011 through 2016. The F67, F70 and Aviso A69 frigates would be replaced by FREMM in the French Navy.
Following phase one contract a new round of equipment was released for the FREMM frigates which included Herakles radar system, Aster 15 and Scalp naval missiles. Scalp naval launched by Sylver A-70 vertical launch system (VLS) is meant to provide land attack capability for those ships, which represents a huge leap forward for European Navies. Besides MM40 Exocet Block 3 anti-ship missile would be provided to the French frigates. The Italian Navy would add to its FREMM TESEO/OTOMAT anti-ship weapon system and MILAS anti-submarine missile.
