Description:
The Jacob Van Heemskerck class frigates, also known as L Class, are a modified version of Kortenaer-class frigates optimized for anti-air warfare missions. The two frigates ordered by the Netherlands replaced two previously ordered Kortenaer-frigates sold before completion to Greece.
The main feature of L-class frigates compared with Kortenaer ships is the helicopter deck and its facilities, which have been given up to install Standard air defense missiles. L-class frigates weapon options comprises up to 40 Standard SM-1MR missiles, 24 Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles (1x8 launcher), eight Harpoon anti-ship missiles, a 30mm Goalkeeper Close-In Weapon System (CIWS), two 20mm guns and four 324mm torpedo tubes.
The Jacob Van Heemskerck were deployed by the Netherlands in the Persian Gulf in the early 1990s following the invasion of Kuwait. Recently, they have been deployed as part of international task forces in support of the war on terrorism.
