Description:
The MEKO A ships are the next generation of surface combatants evolved from the MEKO-family and offered by Germany for the export market. They will accommodate advanced propulsion systems, sensors and weaponry while providing improved survivability using low-observable technologies and design. Retrofit and upgrade processes will be easily carried out thanks to a modular open architecture and cutting-edge construction techniques.
The MEKO A-200 Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) corvette features a towed array sonar and a variable depth sonar. Their VLS accommodates surface-to-air missiles and anti-submarine rockets. Up to two light ASW helicopters can be operated from this ship. Eight Anti-ship missiles, 2 RAM close-in weapon systems, and a 127mm naval gun complete the weapon system. The MEKO A-200 ASW corvette includes a 3D phased array radar and a 2D long range search radar.
The MEKO A-200 (SAN) vessels have been fitted with a new propulsion system called CODAG-WARP (COmbined Diesel And Gas - Waterjet And Refined Propellers) which combines propellers and waterjet propulsion. They have a maximum speed of 27 knots and a cruise speed of 20 knots.
The MEKO A-200 ASW corvette has already been ordered by the South African Navy. Four MEKO A-200 South African Navy (SAN) corvettes were delivered to South Africa between 2004 and 2005. Thales Naval France and African Defence Systems (ADS) consortium outfitted the SAN ships with weapons and electronic systems in Simonstown, South Africa.
