Description:
The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Takanami-class frigates (destroyers in the JMSDF parlance) are a slightly heavier derivative of Murasame multi-role frigate. Takanami-class ships feature extended air defense capability against airborne threats thanks to the Standard Missile SM-2 surface-to-air missile. The resulting frigate leverages the anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) capabilities and stealth design from Murasame-class ships. The JMSDF plans call for the commissioning of eight Takanami-class frigates by 2010.
The propulsion system consists of two SM1C cruise gas turbines and two LM2500 boost gas turbines developing 60,000-shp. The 4,650t class ship top speed is 30 knots. The weapon systems comprises: a 5-in (127mm) naval gun, a 32-cell vertical launching system (VLS) for 16 vertical launch ASROC (VLA) anti-submarine rocket and 16 SM-2 Block IIIA surface-to-air missiles, eight Harpoon anti-ship missiles, two triple 12.75-inch torpedo tubes, and two 20mm Phalanx guns for close-in air defense. Besides, Takanami-class frigates have an aft flight deck and hangar allowing for operation of a single SH-60J patrol helicopter.
