Description: The AN/FPS-117 is a fixed position, highly reliable, solid state, long range, 3D radar with reduced operations, maintenance and personnel costs. They provide airspace surveillance and share commonality with the AN/TPS-77 radar with regard to maintenance activity and Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).

The FPS-117 radars can be managed and controlled remotely and feature COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) technology. The United States Air Force deployed the FPS-117 radars throughout Alaska and across northern Canada. There are approximately 127 FPS-117s operational in 14 countries.

The Royal Air Force upgraded its transportable FPS-117 radar systems, also called the Type 92 or T92, situated at remote sites in Scotland in 2004. The upgrade covers radar signal, data processors and incorporating new frequency synthesizer.

In August 2006 Lockheed-Martin stated that there are 127 AN/FPS-117 radar systems operational in 14 countries worldwide.

In August 2006, Lockheed Martin announced the completion of the upgrade program on eight German Air Force's AN/FPS-117 long-range ground-based radars. The German defense procurement agency BWB ordered the eight radars in 1988 and the modernization contract was placed with Lockheed Martin in November 2003. The upgrade included the computer software and hardware (synthesizers and preprocessors) to achieve the goal of adding to their usefulness 20 to 30 years beyond the FPS-117 original 20-year lifecycle. This effort was also aimed at avoiding the obsolescence of the FPS-117 radar components.
