Origin
Germany

Contractor/s
EADS

Applications
Puma

Derived from:
AN/AAR-60 MILDS

Description: The MUSS is a multi-functional self-protection system designed to be installed on ground vehicles as well as helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and ships. It consists of three elements: warning sensors against RF (Radiofrequency) directed and laser directed threats, a central computer and countermeasures. Warning sensors provide data of incoming missiles or laser illumination to the central computer which activates the appropriate countermeasures in the right timeline in order to prevent the target from receiving a hit.

The warning sensors consists of a laser warner which takes of care of detecting illumination from laser-guided anti-tank weapon systems and UV sensor. The UV sensor is based on MILDS which was originally designed for integration with fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft.

The MUSS has been tested on the Leopard 2 main battle tank and could be deployed in future armored vehicles providing enhanced survivability. In August 2006, the MUSS multi-functional self-protection system was selected for integration on the turret of the first five prototypes of Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicle.
