Description: Saab Bofors Dynamics Ak5 is a derivative of Belgian FN FNC assault rifle designed to meet the requirements of the Swedish Armed Forces. Ak5 is a 5.56x45 NATO standard assault rifle capable of rates of fire of 650 rounds per minute. The rifle magazine has a capacity for 30 rounds. The weapon has been specifically designed to withstand winter/arctic conditions. In addition, the Ak5 can be fitted with telescopic sight and grenade launcher. A shortened barrel version was developed for special operations forces.

The Swedish Armed Forces have ordered more than 40,000 Ak5 assault rifles with the first Belgian-made rifles delivered in 1986 and the first Swedish-made Ak5s in 1987. In late October 2005 the Swedish Materiel Administration awarded Saab Bofors Dynamics a SEK 260 million ($40 million) contract to upgrade the Ak5 weapon system. Saab Bofors Dynamics anticipated that the four-year upgrade program was going to be carried out at its facility in Eskilstuna, Sweden.
